Yesterday I decided to take part in Netflix’s free
trial. Mostly it was just to watch my
favorite Family Guy episodes, but it turned into a bigger idea maker for
me. Page One: Inside The New York Times
is a films about the running of one of the worlds most famous news
organizations. Released in 2011 it
covers how the times handled big news
in 2009 and 2010 as well as the economics of keeping the paper afloat.
One of the stories they cover is the emergence of WikiLeaks.
The brain child of Julian Assange.
First with their articles about the 38 minute video of US military
attack on a group of people and a Reuters van . Second a discussion about when they partnered with Assange to
release a ton of documents covering cover-ups concerning the war in Iraq. As I am watching I search different news
organizations that are spotlighted such as Gawker, Huffington Post.
As I visit these to bookmark them I see the face of someone
I am learning about in the film, Julian Assange. Except this time he’s not wearing an imaginary cape he’s beating
the president off with an invisible stick.
Once one who proudly stood tall in front of crowds, we now we see
standing tired outside a door which leads to the Ecaudorian embassy in London, Where he has been granted asylum.
He speaks of how the government needs to “The US war on whistleblowers
must end” and that U.S. solider Bradley Manning who leaked classified
information to the website; should be released..
As this story unfolds I will be certainly giving my opinion
and keeping up with any updates. For
now though all I will say is this I didn’t mean it to be but holy hell was that
timely!
